WebPark allows visitors to store personal information in the digital world and keeping a geographic link to the real world. When a person visits the park he or she can insert location-based comments (comments that are dependent on the position and time of insertion of the visitor). This type of information could be the place where the visitor parked the car to remember later on, or the place where he saw a specimen of the very rare bearded vulture specie. It is also possible to allow people to share these comments and observations with others in real time. We have called this geo-bookmarking.
Bookmarks allow the authors to leave a message attached to a certain location. Bookmarks can be personal and may be sent home after the visit, or public, for others to read. One can wander around the park and when an animal track is discovered, a public bookmark can be made with position, name, description and maybe multimedia information, so that from that moment on, that information is available to all users in the park. Also more complex interaction can be thought of, like people commenting on each other's bookmarks and creating virtual communities that may grow in an organic fashion, equivalent to the already existing Aka the Blogs internet communities, but now with the added value of being location enabled. Examples 1: a geology professor comments via geo-bookmarks on the geological formations that he and his class encounter. Later, the students will be able to follow the same trail and access all the comments and messages from the professor. Example 2: a park visitor finds a wounded bird and wants to show the location to the bird rehabilitation centre.
