LNEC was created in 1946. An University and a governmental laboratory joint efforts to create the Civil Engineering National Laboratory. This double orientation, of investigation and experimentation, would definitively set the development of LNEC. Three major action lines guide the general activity of LNEC: innovation, under investigation programmes, application of the new knowledge on the investigation programmes that focus on the resolution of specific problems in the fields of civil engineering and construction industry, and the dissemination of knowledge in the national technical and scientific environment.

With its 169 km2, the Swiss National Park is the largest protected area in Switzerland and the country's only National Park designated by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as a category 1 nature reserve (highest protection level - strict Nature Reserve/wilderness area). It is situated in the Engadine and Münstertal valleys (in the canton of Graubünden) in the easternmost corner of Switzerland. The Swiss National Park is famous for its rich variety of alpine animal life and its intact natural landscape and is visited yearly by 150.000 nature lovers.

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division, together with the Geographic Information Analysis (GIA) Division, form the Geographic Information Science (GIScience) concentration at the Department of Geography of the University of Zurich. The roots date back until 1981, making it one of the earliest university groups worldwide exclusively devoted to research and teaching in GIScience. Several staff members and more than a dozen PhD students are involved in various research projects funded by national and international research agencies.
